OUR VISION

At John Henry Primary School, staff and students act as positive role models to impel our wider community to live sustainably, respect the environment and make responsible choices towards reducing ecological footprints. John Henry Primary School strives to be a leader within its community to promote the importance of a healthy environment and sustainable practices.

What’s happening at school?

Nude Food Tuesday’s!

Every Tuesday, we have a Nude Food competition! The class with the most nude food throughout the term will receive a prize!

Nude Food means food that is not in any plastic or paper wrappers.

Community Recycling Program

Sustainability is happening all over John Henry! In 2024, we continue to see huge amounts of students bringing in materials to be recycled, such as batteries and blister packets! Keeping these hard to recycle items out of landfill is a massive help to our environment!

Moreover, families continue to donate used clothing to our Red Nose Bin. All of these clothing donations go to families in our local area who are in need of support. We thank all of our families for their commitment to helping the Red Nose Foundation.

I Sea I Care

We have 6 students in Year 6 participating in the I Sea I Care ambassador program in 2024. I Sea I Care is run through the Dolphin Institute of Victoria and provides students an opportunity to learn about protecting our marine environment and developing leadership skills in our students to make positive changes to the world around us. They participate in 4 excursions throughout the year which include a peer teaching workshop, litter catchment and ponding education, tree planting and swimming with dolphins.

This program requires the Year 6 students to apply for a position.

Garden Club

Garden club is every Thursday after school. You will learn all about planting vegetables and caring for chickens!

Container Deposit Scheme

Our school community can now donate any money they earn through collecting containers to John Henry Primary School! Please see the flyer attached to find out! All the money raised from this program will go towards the students and our sustainability programs.

Green Team!

In 2024, we have introduced a ‘Green Team’! This is made up of students from every class and they are the people who make sure the classrooms are being as sustainable as possible. This includes sorting the recycling bins, taking food scraps out to the compost bins and picking up litter around the school.

Paper Creating!

Our Green team and science academy have been learning how to make paper using scrap paper from the school. This has been an amazing learning experience for these students. It has not only taught them a new skill, but it has also helped keep lots of paper from going to landfill which is a big win for our environment!

Resource Smart Schools

John Henry is proud to be a member of Resource Smart Schools (RSS). ResourceSmart Schools is an award-winning Victorian Government program that assists schools to embed sustainability in everything they do.

The ResourceSmart Schools program provides practical support to schools to reduce resource use, make cost savings, integrate sustainability into the curriculum and share learnings beyond the school gate.
